The pipa, a four-stringed lute with over 2000 years of history, holds a revered position in Chinese culture. Its rich and expressive tones are capable of evoking a wide range of emotions, from the delicate whispers of flowing water to the dramatic intensity of a battlefield. As a cornerstone of traditional Chinese music, the pipa not only reflects the essence of Chinese heritage but also serves as a bridge, connecting audiences around the world to the depth and beauty of Chinese culture.

Peitai (Joyce) Su has been dedicated to the art of the pipa for 26 years, beginning her journey with this traditional Chinese instrument at the age of four. By the age of 14, she had successfully completed all levels of the pipa certification exams. She went on to further her studies at one of China’s top universities, Shandong University, where she not only refined her pipa skills but also delved into both Chinese and Western musicology. During her time at Shandong University, Peitai earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Musicology and Cultural Industry Management.

After graduating, Peitai moved to Nova Scotia, Canada to pursue advanced studies at Mount Saint Vincent University, where she earned a graduate degree in Lifelong Learning. During her time as a graduate student, she performed in numerous music events and also worked as. Chinese language instructor at Saint Mary’s University Confucius Institute.

Through her performances and teachings, Peitai is dedicated to preserving and sharing the profound artistry of the pipa, inspiring others to explore its timeless beauty and cultural significance.
