Swingology

Nova Scotia’s classic gypsy swing band recreates the music of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, violinist Stephane Grappelli, and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. This great Parisian band infused the swing music of the 1930s with the sounds of the gypsy camps and the rowdy Parisian dance halls to create a unique style unmatched for its driving rhythm, inventiveness and excitement.

Swingology is dedicated to bringing the Hot Club style of music to new fans in Nova Scotia and beyond. Our songs range from classics of the swing era to popular tunes and movie/TV themes of today, all done in the irresistible gypsy swing style.

Our first CD Swingology and our second CD Under Paris Skies were both honoured with nominations for awards by both Music Nova Scotia and the ECMA. The former was selected as Music Nova Scotia Jazz Recording of the Year in 2008.

Stephen Cooke of the Chronicle Herald says of our music, “The songs are all familiar, but Swingology freshens them up with enough personality and humour to make you anticipate each new interpretation.” And from Stan Carew of the CBC: “Swingology's new album is a gem...the wonderful music of Django and Stephane Grappelli played with heart, soul, verve and imagination, with a few surprises, too.”

Some audience comments from Swingology shows:
..."SUBLIME!"
...."whimsical, entertaining and soothing all at once..."
..."my feet are tapping and my heart is happy..."
..."lovely for the ears and the soul..."

Swingology consists of anywhere from four to seven performers, depending on the requirements. Minimum configuration is four: two guitars, violin and bass. We can also call on a hot clarinetist, a charming vocalist (who doubles on accordion!), and a third guitarist as appropriate.
