Marty Franklin

UK Vibraphonist, Marty Franklin, first came to Canada in 1981. Already a named musician in the UK, Marty soon established himself in Toronto with performances at the Royal York Hotel and Bourbon Street Jazz Club. He also made several appearances on "The Wayne Thomas Show" and "Music Till Midnight". In 1985, Marty went west to BC where, in addition to the major jazz spots, gigs included a three-year residency at the prestigious Pan Pacific Hotel, one year cruising on the Love Boat and a broadcast on C.B.C. Radio. He also appeared on the Vancouver Jazz Festival over a period of eleven years.

Marty returned to Toronto in 1997 and successfully re-established himself. Appearances included popular jazz spot The Montreal Bistro where he was described by the Toronto Star as follows: "Franklin, from the percussive school of Lionel Hampton and, say, Victor Feldman, believes in intricate but robust playing and quick-thinking rapport with his colleagues. This happily led to sparkling sequences of ideas". While in Toronto, he also appeared at Quigleys; Whistlers; Gate 403 and The Rex Hotel.

Marty returned to the west coast following eighteen months in Europe where appearances included Manchester and Southport Jazz Festivals; The Rhythm Station in Rawtenstall and the popular Pizza Express in Manchester.

Marty has played with jazz greats Maynard Ferguson, Sonny Stitt, Georgie Auld, Bud Freeman and Henry Questa and has also appeared in concert with actor Dudley Moore. Most recently, he has been concentrating on latin jazz influenced by the sounds of

Tito Puente and Cal Cjader and, while in the UK, recorded a latin jazz CD.

Marty is now happy to be a permanent resident in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
